Description:

Indications

Use permethrin cream to treat infestations of scabies and crab lice (Pediculosis). The entire family can be affected by scabies. The entire family must be treated at once if just one member of the group contracts the infection.

Pharmacology

For the treatment of invasion with Sarcoptes Scabiei, Permethrin cream contains Permethrin, a pyrethroid that has the potential to act as a topical scabicidal agent (scabies). It affects the nerve cell film by interfering with the sodium channel current that regulates the polarization of the film. This disturbance causes the bugs’ loss of motion and delayed repolarization.

Pharmacokinetics: The officially recommended organizational strategy is topical, and there is little information available on the systemic introduction or energy absorption following permethrin application to the skin.

Some systemic digestion occurs in the skin. During the first 48 hours, less than 0.5% of the connected permethrin is retained. The liver is most likely where absorbed permethrin is quickly metabolized by ester hydrolysis.

Administration & Dosage

Recommended duration of Treatment:

  • A full tube for adults and kids over 12 years old.
  • Children between the ages of 6 and 12: up to 12 a tube
  • Young children (1?5): up to 1/4 of a tube
  • 2 months to 1-year-old children: up to 1/8 of a tube
  • Children under 2 months: no dosage is known

Interaction

  • The skin should be clean, cool, and dry before applying Permethrin cream.
  • Avoid taking a hot shower or showering recently before applying.
  • For adults and children older than 2 years: Starting at the neck, gently rub the cream into the skin all over the body until it is completely absorbed.
  • It is crucial to include all skin surfaces, including those on the bottoms of the feet, between the toes and fingers, and under the nails.
  • Apply to the face, neck, ears, and scalp of infants under 2 years old, avoiding the area immediately around the eyes and mouth.
  • The cream should be left on for at least 8 hours before washing it off.
  • During the 8-hour treatment period, reapply to any area that will be washed (such as after washing the hands).
  • Per the advice of the doctor, permethrin cream should be applied once more after 7 days if necessary.

Contraindications

Reapply to any area that will be washed throughout the 8-hour treatment period (such as after washing the hands). The doctor advised that if necessary, permethrin cream should be reapplied after 7 days.

Side Effect

In a small number of Scabies patients, discomfort on the skin, commonly described as burning, stinging, or tingling, develops soon after the cream is applied. Other temporary indications of irritation include erythema, edema, eczema, rash, and pruritus.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Pruritus, edema, and erythema are common symptoms of scabies infestation. Permethrin treatment may temporarily aggravate these symptoms. Patients should be advised to avoid contact with their eyes while applying the cream and to flush their eyes with water immediately if the cream gets into their eyes.

  • Common signs of a scabies infestation include pruritus, edema, and erythema.
  • Treatment with permethrin might momentarily make these symptoms worse.
  • Patients should be instructed to avoid getting the cream in their eyes while applying it and to immediately flush them out with water if it does.
