Description:

Indications of Planex Ointment

Calcipotriol cream and ointment is indicated for the topical treatment of chronic stable plaque psoriasis in adult patients.

Pharmacology of Planex Ointment

Calcipotriol is a nonsteroidal anti-psoriatic drug, derived from vitamin D. Calcipotriol exhibits effects similar to those of vitamin D by competing with the 1,25 (OH) 2D3 receptor. Calcipotriol is as effective as 1,25 (OH) 2D3, the naturally active form of vitamin D, in regulating cell proliferation and differentiation, but much less active than 1,25 (OH) 2D3 in its effect on calcium metabolism. Calcipotriol induces differentiation and suppresses the proliferation (without any signs of cytotoxic effects) of keratinocytes, thus reversing the abnormal changes of keratinocytes in the psoriasis candle. Therefore, the therapeutic goal proposed with calcipotriol is to normalize epidermal growth.

Dosage & Administration of Planex Ointment

Calcipotriol cream and ointment should be applied topically to the affected area twice a day (i.e. morning and evening). Less frequent application may be indicated after the initial treatment period. After satisfactory improvement, treatment should be discontinued. In case of relapse after discontinuation of the drug, treatment can be restarted. Lack of experience in the use of calcipotriol for longer than 1 year. The maximum recommended weekly dose of calcipotriol cream is 100 g / week.

Contraindications

The use of calcipotriol cream and ointment is contraindicated in patients with a history of hypersensitivity to any component of the preparation. It is also contraindicated in patients with known disorders of calcium metabolism.

Side Effects of Planex Ointment

Photosensitivity reactions, skin discoloration, blistering, exfoliation, contact dermatitis, and allergic reactions have been reported with topical calcipotriol treatment.

Pregnancy & Lactation

The safety of use during pregnancy has not been established. Therefore, calcipotriol should not be used during pregnancy unless the benefits clearly outweigh the risks. It is not known whether calcipotriol is excreted in human milk, therefore the drug should only be used during breastfeeding if the benefits clearly outweigh the risks. Calcipotriol should not be applied to the breast area during breastfeeding to avoid possible ingestion by the infant.

Precautions & Warnings

Calcipotriol cream and ointment are not recommended in patients with systemic pustular psoriasis, guttate psoriasis, and erythrodermic exfoliative psoriasis. Calcipotriol cream and ointment are not recommended for use on the face.
