Pharmacology
Iodine and the organic polymer povidone are combined to create povidone-iodine. Due to its polymerization, povidone-iodine is preferred to traditional elemental iodine. By gradually releasing elemental iodine, it prolongs the germicidal effects of iodine. It is therefore less dangerous than elemental iodine. It takes little time to exert microbicidal action against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, protozoa, viruses, and fungi/yeast. Additionally, it has sporicidal qualities. It has the widest range of effects of any microbicide. It can be used with soap, blood, serum, pus, mucosal secretions, and water and has a long-lasting germicidal effect.
