Topical therapy for the treatment of acne vulgaris.

Pharmacology of Oxigel Wash 50 Topical Gel

Due to the production of free-radical oxygen, which oxidizes bacterial protein, benzoyl peroxide exhibits moderate keratolytic and antibacterial action. It works against Propionibacterium acnes and Staphylococcus epidermidis.

Dosage & Administration of Oxigel Wash 50 Topical Gel

Adult: As 2.5-10% preparation: Apply 1-2 times daily after cleansing, may gradually increase to tid if needed. Start with lower strength preparations. As cleanser: Wash 1-2 times daily.
Child: ?12 yr Same as adult dose.

Interaction of Oxigel Wash 50 Topical Gel

Other medicines that may be used cutaneously and simultaneously with Benzoyl Peroxide have no known interactions; however, pharmaceuticals that have desquamative, irritating, or drying properties should not be used with Benzoyl Peroxide gel.

Contraindications

Benzoyl Peroxide gel is not recommended for people who have a history of Benzoyl Peroxide hypersensitivity.

Side Effect of Oxigel Wash 50 Topical Gel

Irritation of the skin, including erythema, burning, peeling, dryness, itching, stinging, and a sense of skin tension locally at the application site, is the most common adverse response documented to date with Benzoyl Peroxide cutaneous treatment. When the frequency of therapy is reduced or stopped, this can be reversed. Allergic contact dermatitis, involving oedema of the face, is possible.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Pregnancy Classification C. Either animal research have indicated negative effects on the fetus (teratogenic, embryocidal, or other) but no controlled studies in women exist, or studies in women and animals are unavailable. Only if the possible benefit outweighs the danger to the fetus should drugs be administered.
